Women face unique challenges when negotiating job offers. Stephanie Young, 27, experienced this firsthand. Despite having a resume that boasts four degrees from Stanford University—two engineering degrees, an M.B.A. and a master’s degree in environmental science—she found it downright impossible to negotiate her salary at her first post-college job. She later discovered that her male colleagues were far out-earning her. This led Young to create Riva in 2014. The digital platform analyzes job offers and uses crowd sourced reviews, data and machine learning to determine how much more an employee can request during the negotiating process—whether that’s a higher salary or more equity in a company. Riva’s customers, on average, are able to tack on 20% more to their initial offers, and the company has successfully negotiated on behalf of employees at companies like Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook. Young represents just one of the 30 trailblazing honorees on this year’s 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs list, who manage to strike the right balance between purpose and profit. Faculty use these stories to showcase current young social entrepreneurs or for the Profile of a Social Entrepreneurs assignment for class.
